Meet Together by Kellie O’Dempsey

Byron Bay Beach Hostel, Byron Bay NSW

Meet Together by Kellie O’Dempsey is one of the first public artworks to be commissioned under Byron Shire Council’s public art policy.  Three large scale lightbox artworks were commissioned and installed on the exterior face of the new Byron Bay Beach Hostel building and retail development in Fletcher St.

Kellie’s artwork aims to acknowledge the first people, ancestors, local residents and travellers that pass and have passed through the Shire.   Her imagery consists of dancing and walking figures composed into bright uplifting environments that are both representational and dynamic. The combination of active silhouettes on bright panels, both playfully and nostalgically acknowledge Byron as cultural ‘meeting place’.

The artwork was hand drawn and digitally generated combining handcrafted and digital printing processes.  The artwork was digitally printed onto UV resistant films which were installed within custom built lightboxes.

Kellie consulted with the local indigenous community in the creation of her artwork.

“I have recaptured and recycled landscapes features such as Belongil Beach, Wategoes and the views of Mount Warning/Wollumbin, Mount Chincogan and Tincogan into contemporary colour fields that will work well with both artificial and natural light as light boxes.”
