Guardians of Paramatta Road

PROJECT: Paramatta Rd Homebush

CLIENT: Strathfield Council

LOCATION: Homebush, NSW

Guardians of Parramatta Road was a finalist concept for Strathfield Council’s Stage 2 Public Art Commission in Homebush, curated by CREATIVE ROAD and developed with artists. Jason Phu, Vipoo Srivilasa, and Min Wong. The proposal responded to three distinct sites with sculptures exploring guardianship, transition, and place.

Drawing on local stories, cultural symbolism, and community workshops, each artist proposed a contextual response: Phu’s One Lion Leads to Your Abode, One Lion Leads to Abroad reimagined iconic wayfinding signs as protective entry statements; Srivilasa’s You are a Gem Deity radiated luck and positivity through a deity figure making the universal peace sign; and Wong’s Teamwork is the Dreamwork drew inspiration from the adjacent cycleway and the wellness movement, using the triangular form as both an artistic and meditative device.

Unified through a curatorial vision, the works were proposed as anchors for Parramatta Road’s perpetual motion—transforming the corridor from a site of transit into a destination for landmark public art, guardianship, and shared cultural identity.
