Mangrove Memories

PROJECT: Monarch Residences

CLIENT: Consolidated Properties

LOCATION: Toowong, QLD

Within the subtropical gardens of a premium residential development at Toowong, Mangrove Memories is a collection of bronze sculptures that connects Monarch Residences to its riverfront setting. The work draws on Christopher Bassi’s First Nations and Torres Strait Islander heritage, evoking the mangrove as a place of shelter, memory, and cultural continuity. As the artist’s first public artwork, the project represents an important step in his career—expanding his studio-based painting practice into a new sculptural medium and scale. Positioned throughout the gardens, the sculptures create moments of discovery as residents move through landscaped spaces, enriching amenity and sense of place. CREATIVE ROAD developed the public art strategy, managed the competitive selection process, and worked closely with the artist, consultants, and Brisbane City Council to secure approvals and guide delivery.
