Beneath the Night was a finalist artwork concept for the St George Hospital’s entry, combining five hand-pierced copper bands, a sandstone wall relief, and a circular moving image screen. Informed by traditions of celestial navigation and sacred architecture, the proposal responded to the hospital as a place of care, science, and renewal. The copper bands referenced the astrolabe—an ancient tool for orientation—while the sandstone form offered grounding and permanence. At its centre, footage recorded in Warrumbungle National Park traced circadian rhythms and light transitions, creating a reflective threshold where natural cycles and human wellbeing align.
