LOCUST JONES
Woolloomooloo
PROJECT: Juanita Neilson Community Centre
CLIENT: City of Sydney
LOCATION: Wooloomooloo, NSW
For Woolloomooloo, artist Locust Jones led a series of drawing workshops, inviting people of all ages to explore their neighbourhood through observational drawing and creative expression. The sessions encouraged participants to respond to local architecture, landscapes and everyday life while reflecting on the area’s rich activist history.
These community-generated drawings, along with research into the life of Juanita Nielsen, informed the design of a hand-painted linen curtain created to cover a large mirror in the centre’s communal space. The final artwork is both functional and expressive, shaped by local perspectives and collective memory. This project highlights the importance of inclusive engagement in the public art process and the role of creativity in celebrating place and community.
